Aravind Eye Hospitals is a hospital chain in India. It was founded by Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy at Madurai, Tamil Nadu in 1976. It has grown into a network of eye hospitals and has had a major impact in eradicating cataract related blindness in India.

The L shaped site is accessed by two separate roads at the two ends of the L.  Four linear blocks are placed on the East-West axis to reduce heat gain and catch the south wind.  Two blocks positioned on the longer leg of the L are interconnected to form the hospital block.  The space in between the two blocks is split into an entrance court, an atrium and a rear court by the connecting bridges.  The building design is patient centric and employs sustainable practices to harvest rainwater, treat and recycle waste water and passive climate control in mostly non-air conditioned spaces, while keeping construction cost and time low.

The third linear block houses different types of housing and a guest house.  A central breathing spine brings cross ventilation for the two layers of apartments on the – floor building.

The last block houses the nursing dorms and PG student rooms with their dining and kitchen facilities.
